Course contents

Fever in a returned traveller presents significant diagnostic challenges in general practice, particularly as travel patterns and antimicrobial resistance continue to evolve. Through this interactive learning experience, you'll explore the critical differential diagnoses including malaria, enteric fever, hepatitis A, dengue, and other travel-related infections.
  • Identify the initial key diagnoses in a returned traveller from South Asia with fever, including malaria, typhoid, hepatitis A, dengue, chikungunya, rickettsia, and non-travel related illnesses such as CMV or atypical EBV
  • Recognise when a febrile returned traveller requires hospital referral based on clinical deterioration, potential severity of conditions, and the need for escalation of care
  • Select the most important investigations in initial assessment
  • Understand how empiric therapy for typhoid has changed for returned travellers from South Asia
  • Apply an integrated anatomical pathology approach that combines cytology, immunohistochemistry, and digital pathology for accurate diagnostic decision-making
